Higher education funding – a policy primer for Australia

The University of Melbourne’s Centre for the Study of Higher Education excellent seminar ‘Financing higher education’ (held earlier this week) is now online. The speakers were Bruce Chapman, Steven Schwartz, Jane den Hollander and a wide-ranging discussion covered important questions including: What are the best funding arrangements for higher education in Australia? What are important recent trends in funding? What further changes are required to position Australian higher education for a high-quality and productive future? The presentations (aided by powerpoints on the streamed version) were followed by an informative Q&A session.

While focussed on the Australian context in the light of a federal budget that proposed massive change to the country’s higher education system (including the introduction for the first time of fees for domestic doctoral students), this discussion has relevance for all students (and most academic employees) of higher education institutions.
